Apps for Apes

I wonder if they got obsessed with Flappy Bird, or if they were too smart for that...

I can't tell if this is terrifying or awesome

When monkeys finally take over the world, we can point to this moment as the turning point - when we gave monkeys telepathic remote control over robots.

Baboons can read!!

No way.  No f-ing way.  These baboons can tell if a jumble of letters is an english word or not.  Crazy.   It's only a matter of time now...

Orangutans into DIY

Wow, not much commentary needed here.

Look at those big globe eyes!

Somehow this is a primate...

How to tickle a gorilla

A valuable life lesson indeed.

Glad to see that the orangutans aren't missing out on the latest hot tech trends.  I wonder what their angry birds score is...

Banana Banana Banana

Kanzi is such a smart Bonobo!  You can support Kanzi and many other apes by donating to the Great Ape Trust.

The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore

While we are usually focused on videos and pictures of primates here at Funky Monkey Land, we came across a book that demands a mention.  The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore is a fantastic book about the fine line between human and non-human primates.  Any book with a chimp as the main character is definitely worth the read!

Doubting Monkeys

Check out this bbc article about "metacognition in non-human primates" - that is, do monkeys ever doubt themselves.  Very interesting!

Snow Ball Monkeys!

While many of us are still feeling the pain of winter, these guys know how to make the best of some snow. After all, they are snow monkeys! You can see how the snowball fight went here: snow monkey snowball fight

Thanks to Sir Waddy for the tip!

Whooop whooop whooop!

A genetic experiment to cross a bullfrog with a gibbon led to the amazing siamang.

Real Genius

Another amazing example of the intelligence of our furry relatives.  Even those of us  at FunkyMonkeyLand with a PhD (Primate hysteria Degree) were outsmarted by this chimp.  Bravo!

Baby Monkey!

We have been alerted that the tone of FunkyMonkeyLand recently has been too intellectual, too much about "learning".  Thus, we now provide a brief intermission on our series about the intelligence of primates in the form of a baby monkey riding backwards on a pig.  Enjoy!  (Thanks to ABH and JPO for the tip!)

Chimp vs. Child: Round 2

The show goes on the road in the second round of the problem-solving face-off between human children and our closest relatives.  Here, too, chimps are wily enough to go straight for the deliciousness.  Game-set-match chimps!

Chimp vs. Child: Round 1

In an epic battle of wits, chimps go head-to-head with human children.  The results may surprise you (unless of course, you're a crazy primate lover, in which case this clip will confirm your suspicions)...

Who is that dashing ape in the mirror?

Another interesting study that blurs the (artificial) line between humans and primates.  This one shows that apes are capable of self-recognition, a feat formerly thought exclusive to humans.  Go apes!

We are all primates

While we at FunkyMonkeyLand are firm believers in the fact that humans are just the 5th ape, there are still many out there who haven't been able to share in the warm and fuzzy feelings of knowing that we are all deeply connected with our primate cousins.  To help spread the knowledge of primates to everyone, we are going to start a "we are all primates" series,  highlighting the blurring line between ape and human.

To kick off this series, here's a great background video on Kanzi, the Bonobo who uses a computer screen to talk.

Go to to make a donation to further the understanding between apes and humans. Thanks to Ryan A for the tip!

There's gotta be a size 6 in here somewhere...

I can't tell if this would be an awesome or terrible experience.  Probably awesome.

Once again, thanks to Coneybaloney. If you have a pic or video of a monkey gettin' funky, send it in to!
